Where We Stand Today
This is the last post in a short series on Uberlândia Development Initiatives (UDI), the nonprofit I helped found to support Estação Vida, a community center in Uberlândia, Brazil. The earlier posts covered the neighborhood UDI exists to serve and the story of getting the organization off the ground back in 2020. A few years have passed since then, and it's worth catching up on what's happened.
From startup to established
Founding a nonprofit is one thing; keeping it running is another. In December 2020, UDI was granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the IRS — the milestone that made every donation to the organization officially deductible for U.S. donors. That was the piece that had been missing the whole time: a legal, secure way for people outside Brazil to support Estação Vida's work.
It then took time to build out banking and a reliable transfer process. In April 2023, UDI made its first donation via bank wire to Brazil. Those funds went toward installing a system of security cameras at Estação Vida, giving the center a safer, better-monitored environment for the more than 200 children and youth who pass through it. It wasn't a flashy first gift, but it was exactly the kind of practical, on-the-ground support UDI was built to provide.
Why we do this
Somewhere along the way, the board put into words what had mostly lived in our heads until then. Our vision is a thriving, empowered community where every child and family in Shopping Park has access to quality education, essential services, and opportunities for holistic development — a future where each person can reach their full potential and contribute to a connected, inclusive world.
Our mission is more specific: UDI exists to foster sustainable growth in the Shopping Park community by providing educational, social, and developmental support to its youth and families, bridging gaps in access to essential services, promoting the rights and welfare of every individual, and building strong partnerships locally and internationally. We hold up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as our standard for what a better world looks like, and we try to live up to it through continuous engagement, advocacy, and plain persistence.
The team behind it
UDI's board has changed some faces and roles since that first meeting in 2020, but the core commitment hasn't moved:

Vinny's seat as Estação Vida's representative has been constant since day one — a reminder that this organization only works because it stays genuinely connected to the community it exists to serve, not just its donors.
What's next
UDI is still a small organization, and that's fine — it was never meant to be anything else. Our job is to be a dependable bridge: raising Estação Vida's profile abroad, keeping the giving process simple and legitimate, and making sure the funds that come in go toward things that actually matter to the kids and families of Shopping Park, whether that's security cameras, educational supplies, or whatever the center identifies as the next real need.
