Remember when "Wild Wild West" came out and historian complained about how all that 20th century technology was completely out of place in a story set in the 19th century? How about the way they howled when "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" came out? The scholars really needed to relax. These and similar movies can be placed in a sub-genre called "steampunk," one in which anachronisms are expected and celebrated.
Steampunk's been around for a while, but like a lot of cool things, it's slipped my attention. What is steampunk? Click here for a pile of info about it, gathered by Kosmix.
- My maternal great aunts' home was filled with antiques, many from the late 1800s, early 1900s. In high school and college I loved to go to their upstairs rooms and study.
- The style of that Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight Tonight" video always appealed to me.
- While in Brazil I discovered an affection for Sherlock Holmes cases.
- I've always wished I could have an office in some funky Victorian style.
