Linux Ad on Austin Radio

So far as anyone seems to know it's a first: a radio ad for Linux has been playing in Austin, TX for a couple of weeks now. Click here to listen to it. There's apparently been quite a bit of "buzz" about this online, all of which I missed until yesterday. Some think it's great, while others question the value of this ad. One complaint in particular rubbed me the wrong way. It goes like this: Don't run an ad for "Linux", since there are many distros of Linux.

Groan.

Yes, there are many, many GNU/Linux distros in circulation. Some are not very good for newbies, while others, like Ubuntu, have real potential for popular acceptance. In reality, anyone can hack together their own custom Linux distro.

This ad didn't mention a particular distro because it didn't have to do so. "Linux" is a name people might possibly recognize, and the organization behind the ad can actually guide people into the right distro for them. It wasn't an attempt to sell a particular distro, but to sell the service of getting Linux and dropping Windows.

I think it's great. The world hasn't changed fundamentally because of it, but it's a good ad. What do you think?
