Lubuntu: LXDE Enters the Canonical Fold

Not too long ago my friend Allen Andersen wrote about his experience with Xubuntu, a lightweight derivative of the Ubuntu operating system. Now an even lighter-weight Ubuntu alternative is on the horizon: Lubuntu.

Utilizing the LXDE desktop environment, Lubuntu strives to be fast and energy-efficient. It is to be an operating system for older computers and low-powered netbooks.

For now there's just a live cd with no install option available that is intended only for testing purposes. It's pretty rough. I couldn't get it to go online and no office applications come standard with it.

Although I prefer Gnome, if Lubuntu progresses as well as the rest of the Ubuntu family, I may well switch my laptop over to it, eventually. I could use the enhanced speed.
